Reversing language pair in TMX file / Trados TM

Imagine that you have a Trados translation memory. Trados allows you using the TM in one direction only. Don’t you want to use the valuable data in the other direction when a chance comes? Here is how to do it (this procedure can be used for any TMX (exported TM).

Assume that XX-XX is the source language and YY-YY is the target language. We want to create translation memory containing YY-YY/XX-XX language pair.

  1. Open translation memory in Translator’s Workbench. Select File > Export to export the translation memory into TMX file. Close Workbench.
  2.

  3. Open the TMX in any plain text editor, such as Windows Notepad or PSPad.
  4.

  5. Search for srclang=”XX-XX (where XX-XX is the source language code).
  6.

  7. Replace srclang=”XX-XX” with srclang=”YY-YY”.
  8.

  9. Search for <tuv xml:lang=”XX-XX”> and replace every occurrence (usually Ctrl+H and Replace All) with <tuv xml:lang=”A-A”>.
  10.

  11. Search for <tuv xml:lang=”YY-YY”> and replace every occurrence with <tuv xml:lang=”B-B”>.
  12.

  13. Search for <tuv xml:lang=”A-A”> and replace every occurrence with <tuv xml:lang=”YY-YY”>.
  14.

  15. Search for <tuv xml:lang=”B-B”> and replace every occurrence with <tuv xml:lang=”XX-XX”>.
  16.

  17. Save the file and quit the editor.
  18.

  19. Open Translator’s Workbench, create a new translation memory with appropriate language pair and import the updated TMX (select File > Import).

Example: Current language pair: EN(US)-CS, new language pair: CS-EN(US).

In TMX:

  1. Search for srclang=”EN-US” and replace it with srclang=”CS”.
  2.

  3. Search for <tuv xml:lang=”EN-US”> and replace every occurrence with <tuv xml:lang=”A-A”> (usually Crtl+H and Replace All).
  4.

  5. Search for <tuv xml:lang=”CS”> and replace every occurrence with <tuv xml:lang=”B-B”>.
  6.

  7. Search for <tuv xml:lang=”A-A”> and replace every occurrence with <tuv xml:lang=”CS”>.
  8.

  9. Search for <tuv xml:lang=”B-B”> and replace every occurrence with <tuv xml:lang=”EN-US”>.

Note: Please make sure you use correct language codes.
