TMX exported from SDLX fails when importing into Transit NXT

As a blogger and professional translator, I am glad that the people read my posts. Besides being a personal knowledge base to remember procedures and problems that I once solved, this site is to provide my readers with useful in-sight information. I was contacted the other day by one of my readers with a problem connected with importing TMX file created using this post into Transit NXT. Here is what to do when you experience the same problem.

Every conversion between individual CAT tools may bring problems. The problem of my reader was that it was impossible to import the TMX file created using SDLX into Transit NXT.

I do not use SDLX very often, just for a few clients, SDL being one of them. What I like on SDLX is a set of its data manipulation tools. When experimenting, I noticed that the TMX created using SDLX and SDL Trados 2007 differ a bit, particularly the structure of export files. So far, I have never experienced any TMX incompatibility problems between SDLX and Trados 2007, but it appears that this may not be the case when working with other CAT tools.

So, to get back to the problem, this is a procedure that makes the invalid (for Transit NXT) file working in Transit.

  1. Open Trados Translator’s Workbench and create a new translation memory with a correct language pair.
  2. Import the TMX created in SDLX into this new TM.
  3. Export the translation memory from Trados Translator’s Workbench back into TMX file.
  4. Import this TMX into Transit NXT.

You are done, it should work now. As usually, there is no 100% guarantee this will work in your particular case.
